Ever wondered who owns craftsman tools? What about Milwaukee, Mac Tools or Skilaw? You may be surprised to find that only a few power tool companies have your favorite tools. Yes, most tool brands belong to the parent company, which also controls other power tool manufacturers and brands. We break it down for you… with diagrams!
We did not include every tool company in this picture. To be honest, we can’t put them all on the page. However, we will do our best to include as many tool brand parent companies as possible below. It makes the most sense to start with the biggest ones.
Stanley Black & Decker (SBD) attracted attention when it acquired Craftsman Tools in 2017 after Sears closed 235 stores in 2015. However, the company owns many brands. The company’s history can be traced back to 1843, when there was a man named Frederick Stanley, and the company soon took root. In 2010, it merged with Black and Decker, another company founded in 1910. As of 2017, the company maintained a $7.5 billion business in tools and storage alone. SBD brands include:
It turns out that TTI owns Milwaukee Tool and many other power tool companies. It also grants RIDGID* and RYOBI licenses for cordless power tools (RIDGID owned by Emerson). TTI stands for Techtronic Industries Company Limited (TTI Group). TTI was established in Hong Kong in 1985, sells tools all over the world, and has more than 22,000 employees. TTI is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, and its global annual sales in 2017 exceeded US$6 billion. Its brands include:
*As a general rule, Emerson manufactures “red” RIDGID (pipe) tools. TTI produces “Orange” RIDGID tools under license.
no longer. In 2017, Chervon acquired Skil Power Tool Brands from Bosch. This has added two major brands to their product portfolio: Skilsaw and Skil. Chervon started its power tool business unit as early as 1993 and launched the EGO brand of cordless outdoor electric equipment in 2013. In 2018, the company changed its name to Skil (including logo) and released new 12V and 20V cordless power tools. Today, Chervon tools and products are sold in more than 30,000 stores in 65 countries. Chervon produces the following brands:
First of all, Bosch Tools represents only part of the Bosch Group, which includes Robert Bosch Co., Ltd. and more than 350 subsidiaries in more than 60 countries. In 2003, Robert Bosch Co., Ltd. merged its North American power tools and power tool accessories divisions into one organization and established Robert Bosch Tools in North America. The company designs, manufactures and sells power tools, rotating and swinging tools, power tool accessories, laser and optical levels, and distance measurement tools worldwide. Bosch also produces the following tools:
Husqvarna Group manufactures chain saws, trimmers, robotic lawnmowers and driving lawnmowers. The group also produces garden watering products as well as cutting equipment and diamond tools for the construction and stone industries. They operate in more than 100 countries and have more than 13,000 employees in 40 countries. Husqvarna Group also has the following tools:

JPW owns several major brands, including Jet, Powermatic and Wilton. The company is headquartered in Lavergne, Tennessee, but also has operations in Switzerland, Germany, Russia, France, Taiwan and China. They sell products in 20 countries around the world. Their tool brands include:
Apex Tool Group is headquartered in Sparks, Maryland, USA and has more than 8,000 employees. They operate in more than 30 countries in North and South America, Europe, Australia and Asia. Annual revenue of hand tools, power tools, and electronic tools used in the industrial, automotive, aerospace, and construction/DIY markets exceeds $1.4 billion. The following tool manufacturers belong to APEX Tool Group:
Emerson is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri (USA) and controls power tool manufacturers and products in the industrial, commercial and residential markets. Although TTI grants RIDGID licenses for power tools, Emerson controls the following tools (and other tools):
TTS or Tooltechnic Systems, headquartered in Windlingen, Germany, owns Festool (electric and pneumatic tools), Tanos (not to be confused with the man who destroyed half of the universe), Narex, Sawstop and now Shape Tools. TTS is indeed behind the scenes, because it doesn’t seem to have its own website (at least not in the US) or official logo. In the bullet point format, its subsidiaries include:
Yamabiko Corporation was established in 2008 and has three core business segments: outdoor power equipment, agricultural machinery and industrial machinery. Headquartered in Japan, Yamabiko is a global company with its main markets in Japan and North America, and is expanding in Europe and Asia. Tool brands include:

In 1916, J. Walter Becker apparently founded the Ideal Commutator Dresser Company in Chicago from his mother’s kitchen. More than 100 years later, Ideal Industries provides services to technicians and workers around the world. They serve the electrical, construction, aerospace, and even automotive markets. You may know a few of their brands:
Who made the power tools for port freight is still a mystery-probably because they may have changed suppliers in the past. Someone suggested LuTool, a company established in June 1999 to supply their power tools. LuTool is headquartered in Ningbo, China, and has a North American office in Ontario, Canada. LuTool is owned by Gemay (Ningbo Gemay Industrial Co., Ltd.), which is also headquartered in Ningbo, China.
Not to be outdone, others suggested Powerplus as the manufacturer behind Drill Master, Warrior, Bauer and Hercules tools. Powerplus is a division of the European company Varo, headquartered in Belgium.
We hope we can give a clear answer, but Harbour Freight has been tight-lipped about its power tool manufacturing partners.
Hilti and Makita are just Hilti and Makita. Hilti does not have any subsidiaries or parent companies under it. On the other hand, Makita did acquire the Dolmar brand, consolidating its already impressive line of outdoor power equipment and tools. The market share enjoyed by each of these companies is impressive!
We can’t miss the popular private labels offered by large retailers and home improvement warehouses. Please note that many (if not all) of the following brands represent ODM or OEM solutions. This means that the tool is specified by the store but executed by another manufacturer. In other cases, the tool is “provided” to the retailer and then mass-produced after accepting the buyer’s order.
Although you may think you know the owners of all these power tool manufacturers, integration has changed the competitive environment. So far, Stanley Black & Decker has demonstrated the largest acquisition model. Companies such as TTI, Apex Tool Group, and ITW also like to increase their numbers.
Finally, if we missed any tool mergers or acquisitions, please comment below. We want to keep this article updated-this is a much more difficult task than we thought! You can also contact us via Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
