Salt Lake City (ABC4)-One person died after a “tragic incident” at the University of Utah Hospital on Wednesday.
Alison Flynn Gaffney, executive director of the University Hospital, said the hospital is moving a piece of equipment—an MRI machine—from the fourth floor to the first floor. She said that during the move, two people were injured. One of them has died.
According to Gaffney, the hospital has been planning to move these devices for “years”, and multiple emergency and safety plans are already in effect.
The Salt Lake City fire initially responded to the scene, saying it was a dangerous goods incident. According to Gaffney, firefighters have cleared the scene. OSHA is also investigating.
Gaffney said the average MRI weighs 20,000 pounds. Moving the machine, Gaffney called it an “external incident,” explaining that it involved “infrastructure and scaffolding” and “multiple security components.” She added that it is not yet clear what caused the fatal incident.
According to Gaffney, such actions “have been happening all the time” and the hospital has successfully done it “many times, many times”.
